The second half of Robert D. Campbell Jr. High’s eighth-grade basketball game saw just about everything Thursday night. Between a fan getting ejected, a coach receiving a technical foul and the scorekeepers getting into it, it was an intense game, to say the least.

The Cardinals trailed Georgetown Middle early after starting center Brady Davis was forced to the bench after picking up three fouls in the first quarter.

With 1:34 remaining in the second quarter, the Cardinals were down nine points, their largest deficit of the game.

The Cards were able to close out the half by scoring the final five points, closing the gap to four by halftime.

Their run didn’t stop there as JP Gaines began to take over the game. A tough layup gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game at 26-24.

Once Campbell took a lead, the intensity in the gym rose. The Georgetown fans started a, “let’s go Buffaloes” chant, only to be matched by a much louder, “let’s go Cardinals” chant by the home team.

After several fouls against Georgetown, a Buffaloes fan in the front row began yelling at the referees, forcing them to have him ejected.

As Campbell extended their lead, the game got chippier. Players had to be separated from each other by referees. A player committed a foul and the two scorekeepers had different amounts of fouls recorded for him, causing a stoppage of play to find out whether or not the player had fouled out. And Georgetown’s coach yelled a profanity at the referee, giving him a technical foul.

The Cardinals continued to add to their lead in the fourth quarter as Davis began to heat up after sitting on the bench for most of the first half. Davis put up a team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter to help give the Cardinals a 54-48 win over their conference rival Georgetown.

The sixth-grade team was able to find success in the night’s first game, jumping out to a 21-2 lead early. Their full-court press was relentless, only allowing the Buffaloes to score 21 points in the game. Campbell won the sixth-grade game 68-21.

The seventh-grade team wasn’t able to pull out a win, falling 38-30.

Campbell is back in action Monday when they travel to Woodford County for a tripleheader. Sixth-grade will start the action with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
