Boys soccer team gives out awards at postseason banquet

George Rogers Clark’s boys soccer team had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements from this season on Saturday as they hosted their annual postseason banquet.

The team finished 16-4-2 and made the semifinals of the region tournament. The team improved their record by 11 wins under first-year head coach Nicholas Vogler and finished with their best record since 2007.

The Cards allowed only 24 goals in their 22 games throughout the season, finishing 15th in goals allowed per game. Their offensive production was also much improved, scoring 79 goals on the year, the second-most in the region and 28th-most in the state.

GRC advanced to the region semifinals, the furthest postseason run since 2014.

Senior Dylan Reffett was given the Varsity Coach’s Award. The Varsity Offensive Player of the Year Award was given to freshman Brandon Beltran. Nathan Sidwell, a junior, was given the Varsity Most Valuable Player Award. Junior Conner Brown earned the Varsity Defensive Player of the Year Award and Taylan Hayes, who’s also a junior, was given the Varsity Most Improved Player Award.

The team also honored the junior varsity soccer team for their efforts on the field this season.

Freshman Kyler Gashel was given the JV Defensive Player of the Year Award. Another freshman, Mason Johnson, won the JV Coach’s Award. Sophomore Joe Dolen earned the JV Most Valuable Player Award and freshman Skyler Hamon won the JV Offensive Player Award.

The team also recognized its four seniors, Reffett, Emidio Figueroa, Ryan Sosa and Tyree Brown for their contributions throughout their careers.
