— The death of a man in the bluegrass region brings to six the number of confirmed swine flu deaths in Kentucky.

— Downtown parkers will have a little more room after the Clark County Fiscal Court voted to purchase and demolish two buildings for a parking lot. The magistrates voted unanimously to spend $235,000 to purchase the former Ark of Mercy Church of God building and its neighbor on the corner of West Broadway and Wall Alley.
— Caycee Shimfessel, 10, daughter of Scott and Cynthia Shimfessel, won first place in the Secretariat miniature horse look-alike contest at the Secretariat Festival in Bourbon County.

— Clark County will be well-represented at the Miss Kentucky County Fair pageant as Makenzie Shuler and Kaylee Weistroffer compete in their age divisions at the Crown Plaza in Louisville.

— Winchester’s Big Valu market closed its doors for good. Owner Bob Slone said he decided to close the grocery store, located in the Shoppers Village, after many other stores in the shopping center also closed.

— Local girls will be able to get their kicks out of high school soccer, the Clark County Board of Education decided. The board voted unanimously to approve a request from Karen McNabb allowing the creation of a girls’ soccer team at George Rogers Clark High School.
— Melody Mason and Ashley Breeze, both of Winchester, are finalists for homecoming queen at Eastern Kentucky University. Mason, a sophomore pre-law major, is daughter of Bobby and Teresa Mason. Breeze, a sophomore pre-med biology major, is daughter of Bill and Virginia Breeze.

— The GRCHS Cardinal Band has won several top awards in statewide band contests recently. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is the Color Guard, which was added to the band this year.
Oct 15, 1969
— William Nelson Curry II won junior 4-H showmanship honors at the Blue Grass District 4-H and FFA Steer Show. Other 4-H members from Clark County participating in the show were Judy Johnson, John Mayer, Frances Kennedy, Everett Curry and Vicki Cline.

— A House subcommittee that has shown little enthusiasm for President Nixon’s lottery draft plan has indicated it will back the administration’s idea of calling up 19-year-olds first.
