Robert D. Campell Jr. High played their final football games of the season on Saturday as both the seventh and eighth grade teams hosted the Bryan Station on George Rogers Clark’s new Cardinal Stadium.

The seventh grade team picked up a 16-8 win over the Defenders. They were able to jump out to an 8-0 lead after Najee Harris picked up a 16-yard rushing touchdown and got into the end zone again on the following two-point conversion. The second Cardinal touchdown came on a halfback pass from Camahni John to Nicholas Helmburg to begin the fourth quarter, with Harris picking up another two-point conversion.

The Cardinals’ defense held strong throughout the entire game but couldn’t complete the shutout as they allowed the Defenders to score with 10 seconds remaining.

The eighth grade team had similar success on defense, allowing only one late touchdown in their 30-6 win.

The scoring started for the Cardinals in the first quarter as Caden Spicer threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carter Maynard. McCaden Skeens converted the two-point attempt for the Cards to give them an early 8-0 lead.

Zaydin Turner was the next Cardinal to get on the board, a 39-yard rushing touchdown off a trick play got Turner into the end zone. The next touchdown for RDC came from Turner on a trick play as well, this time with Maynard throwing him the ball on another Cardinal halfback pass. Ty Miller converted the RDC two-point attempt from a Spicer throw.

Spicer was able to get into the end zone himself coming from a quarterback sneak as the third quarter came to an end, and another Spicer-to-Miller two-point conversion gave the Cardinals a 30-0 lead.

“This is how I envisioned the season ending, with these kids having fun, playing hard and enjoying the last game of their eighth-grade career,” interim coach Bob Howard said. “They were great examples and leaders for our seventh-graders and our Lil’ Cardinals to not give up, to face adversity and to come back fighting. I’m very proud of them and I’ll miss them but I’ll enjoy watching them as they play at GRC.”
