The 2019 WinSprint Triathlon took place Saturday morning at Parks and Recreation.
The annual one-of-a-kind swim-bike-run event uses its proceeds to purchase bicycles for the Annual Bicycle Rodeo. Last year, 40 bikes were given away to the community’s youth and that number is expected to increase significantly this year.
The race had 109 total registrants from Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio. There were 32 participants from Clark County and 67 from outside of Clark County, with the farthest participant from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There were 11 participants under 18 years old, with the youngest participant only 11 years old. The oldest participant was N.T. Ricker out of Lexington, who is 69 years old.
There were over 40 volunteers from the Winchester area who made this event possible, including Winchester Police and Clark County Sherif’s Department providing traffic direction at major intersections, sponsorship from 19 local businesses and individuals as well as being the only race in Winchester to provide childcare to participants.
There were several different variations to the race, including road bike vs. stationary bike, individual vs. team and triathlon vs. duathlon.
The race’s top overall time came from Matt VonLinger from Stanford, who posted a time of 47:34.3 on the road bike course.
The top female finisher on the road bike course was Ciara Pickering from Lexington, who posted a 57:40.0.
The top time on the stationary bike course was Kelly Adams, out of Louisville, who finished in 50:21.8
Winchester’s top time in the triathlon came from Kelsey Grissam, who finished with a time of 57:10.2 on the stationary bike. The city’s top finisher on the road bike course came from Logan Sallee with a time of 58:01.3.
