The George Rogers Clark boys soccer team hosted the St. Patrick Saints Wednesday night in the final game of the regular season.
With the number two seed in the district tournament locked up, the Cardinals were using this game as the final tune-up before post-season play.
GRC came out hot with Brandon Beltran scoring the first goal of the game only two minutes into the contest. The goal gave Beltran a goal in every game this season that he has played in, excluding a game against Corbin he left early because of injury.
The next goal from the Cardinals came minutes later after Nathan Sidwell was fouled in the box, giving him a penalty kick that he put in.
Beltran scored a second goal with 29 minutes to play in the first half, pushing his season total to 26.
Skyler Hamon got in on the scoring action for the Cardinals, putting in the final goal of the half to extend the GRC lead to 4-0.
The second half saw a battle between two defenses, with neither team scoring until the Saints put in a tough goal with four minutes to play.
The Cardinals didn’t let up and scored the final goal of the game with three minutes to play, courtesy of Conner Brown after he juked a St. Patrick defender, giving the Cards a 5-1 lead that would stay until the final buzzer.
The Cardinals are hosting next week’s 39th District Tournament, and they take on Bourbon County in the first round at 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 8.
The winner of the game will head to the region tournament and will take on the winner of Paris vs. Montgomery County for the district championship.
The winner of the district championship will host the 10th Region Tournament the following week.
