George Rogers Clark’s girls soccer team headed to Cardinal Stadium Saturday afternoon for their final home game of the regular season.
The game was extra special for two Lady Cardinals, Caitlin Bowling and Delaney Manning, the only seniors on the 2019 team.
“We’re every year trying to move the program forward. With [Bowling and Manning] they’ve helped do that,” head coach Matthew Abner said. “With them, it’s a lot of leadership, they’re highly skilled, two of the top players on the team and they just help this program move forward.”
The day began with the team celebrating the two seniors. They sat on the top of Jeeps with no roofs as they were escorted onto the field for the final time. They were met and hugged by each of their teammates as their voices came over the loudspeaker, recalling their favorite memories as Cardinals.
As the emotional ceremonies came to an end, it was time for the Lady Cardinals to get to business and take on Martin County.
The game started with Bowling at midfield, kicking the ball off for the final time. The Cards had to clear the ball out of bounds to substitute Bowling out of the game, who wasn’t able to play because of a knee injury.
Her sub, Nicole Davis, was the first player to score for GRC, putting in a missed shot from another player seven minutes into the game.
Manning was the second Cardinal to get on the board, scoring a goal just three minutes later.
The scoring barrage was just getting started for the Lady Cardinals, as GRC’s Ciana Araya found the back of the net with 20 minutes to play in the half, coming off a Bush assist.
In the next nine minutes, the Cardinals would score four more times.
The first was Davis’s second goal of the day coming from Bush’s second assist of the day.
Bush then found the back of the net herself, extending the Cardinal lead to 5-0.
Araya scored her second goal of the day, pushing her season total to 18.
Shelby Vaughn, one of two Cardinals who have at least 10 goals and assists, got herself on the board with 10 minutes to play in the half. Her goal came off a Rivers Gilkison assist, her first assist of the season.
Vaughn scored one more goal as the first half wound to a close, giving the Lady Cardinals an 8-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Cardinals came out of the locker room on fire, scoring twice in the first 90 seconds to end the game by mercy rule.
The first of the two Cardinals’ second-half goals came from Manning, which would be her last regular-season, home goal during her Lady Cardinal career.
Vaughn picked up a hat trick to end the game, giving the Cards a 10-0 victory, their second of the season.
“We were able to connect passes,” Abner said after the game. “We were able to use our speed with our passing to get on the backside and put some easy goals in.”
GRC finishes the regular season as they travel to Harrison County Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
