George Rogers Clark’s football team hosted the Ballard Bruins Friday night.
The Cardinals came out ready to show what their offense was made of, winning the coin toss and electing to receive.
However, the Cards turned the ball over just two plays into the game and the Bruins, with great field position, were able to capitalize and score a touchdown on their first offensive play 30 seconds into the game. They would never relinquish their lead.
A quick three and out from GRC gave the Bruins the ball back and they took it to the end zone again, going up 14-0.
Two empty possessions from the Cardinals gave the Bruins two more possessions with good field position and they broke off two touchdowns on each of the first plays of the drives.
Down 27-0, Azariah Israel gave the Cards life and took the kickoff to the house to get GRC their first points of the night at the end of the first quarter.
The Cardinals took their momentum into the second quarter with a Tye Boyken interception.
GRC wasn’t able to capitalize in the second quarter and surrendered three more touchdowns, pushing the Bruins lead to 49-7 by halftime and starting a running clock for the remainder of the game.
Ballard picked up in the second half where they left off, scoring on their second play to extend their lead to 55-7.
Qua Lewis was able to get his hands on a Ballard field goal attempt late in the third to keep them from extending their lead.
To start the fourth quarter, Israel found his way to the end zone again, this time on a 64-yard rush.
Neither team would score again and the Cardinals fell 55-14.
“We’re going to reload,” GRC head coach Oliver Lucas said. “Everything is still in front of us, we still have district ahead of us.”
GRC is back at home Friday night against Cooper at 7:30 p.m. for homecoming.
