‘Walk With A Child’ shops for 152 children

Eight-year-old Emma Baker held up a turquoise-colored JoJo Siwa shirt for her sisters to see as she searched the Walmart racks for new clothes.

Emma and her sisters were one of many families shopping in Walmart Saturday morning during the Winchester Kiwanis Club’s annual Walk with a Child.

Kirby Roberts, program chair with Kiwanis, said club members spent more than a year raising over $11,000 to take hundreds of children shopping for school clothes. They raised enough to take 152 children shopping, he said.

There was a long line of families waiting their turn to go shopping Saturday. Each family was accompanied by a club member or volunteer as they went through the store.

Volunteer Cindy Banks said she loved helping 7-year-old Kindall Phyllis search for clothes. Banks has sons, so shopping for a girl Saturday was fun, she said.

The Winchester club has done this event for at least 40 years. Each child had $80 to spend for clothes, be it coats, pants, socks, shoes or whatever they and their parents, grandparents or guardians agree on.

Officials at the preschool and the four elementary schools recommended children with needs to the club. The George Rogers Clark High School girls basketball team volunteered for the event this year, and Walmart provided doughnuts, milk and orange juice.

“We do several things to help the community and the kids primarily, the children of Clark County,” Roberts said. “It’s a good cause.”
