In a matchup between the top two teams in the 10th Region, George Rogers Clark traveled to Campbell County to take on the Camels.
With a one-game lead over the Camels in the region, this was an important matchup for both teams.
Both teams got off to slow starts in their big game Monday night, with both sides failing to score a goal midway through the first half.
The Lady Cardinals were able to get on the board first with ten minutes remaining thanks to a Julia Pohl goal off an Allie Eury assist.
It was Eury’s first assist of the season after seeing action in all 18 games for the Cardinals this season.
But nearly as soon as GRC got on the board the Camels evened the game back up at 1-1.
The two teams headed to the locker rooms tied at 1-1 looking to make adjustments in the second half to come away with a win against a region opponent.
The two teams faced a defensive battle, not allowing a goal for a majority of the second half.
It looked as if the Camels were going to take a lead with nine minutes to play, but GRC goalie Carrie Stevens made a nice save to keep it level at 1-1.
The Camels kept attacking and eventually found the back of the net coming off a loose ball in the box with 90 seconds to play.
The Cards, in thrilling fashion, earned a penalty kick in the remaining time and sent freshman Ciana Araya to take it.
Araya was able to get the ball past the keeper to tie the game just before the buzzer, sending GRC home with a 2-2 tie.
The Lady Cardinal’s next game will be their final home game of the season and senior night as GRC hosts another set of Lady Cardinals, Martin County.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday.
