Riding a five-game winning streak, George Rogers Clark’s girls soccer team put their unbeaten record in district play on the line Wednesday night as they hosted Montgomery County.

The two 39th District teams battled it out in with shots flying left and right.

Midway through the half, GRC had three consecutive shots barely miss, two hitting the post and one hitting the crossbar.

Coming up short on all attempts, the Cardinals had Julia Pohl take a free kick from slightly outside of the box with five minutes left in the half, but it missed wide right.

With less than a minute to play in the period, Shelby Vaughn took another free kick for GRC, this one sailing over the crossbar and the teams headed into the break tied at zero.

The second half was a different story for the Cardinals, scoring in 37 seconds to take the lead. The goal was a long-range kick that fell in over the keepers head by Delaney Manning coming off a Pohl assist.

Two minutes later, Pohl took another shot at goal and the ball bounced off the keeper’s hands and went in, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.

The goals didn’t stop there, Allie Bush put in two goals in three minutes, one coming from a Ciana Araya assist, to give the Lady Cardinals a 4-0 lead just 10 minutes into the second half.

Araya netted a goal of her own 10 minutes later, scoring the fifth and final goal for the Cardinals.

With GRC’s commanding lead, they were able to rest their starters and give other girls an opportunity to play more minutes before the regular season ends.

The defense held strong for the majority of the remaining time but surrendered a goal to the Indians with four minutes to play.

George Rogers Clark is back in action on Saturday as they travel to Scott High School to take on the Lady Eagles in what is sure to be a good game.

Scott is in third in the 10th Region, trailing only GRC and Campbell County, and hosts one of the region’s top defenses, allowing only 17 goals on the season.

The game is slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
