In a matchup of 10th Region heavyweights, the George Rogers Clark boys soccer team traveled to Harrison County to take on the Thorobreds, who were tied for the fewest goals allowed in the state heading into Tuesday’s game.
The Cardinals knew the Thorobreds would be a tough matchup, but they were up for the challenge.
The Thorobreds were able to get on the board first, putting the Cardinals in a hole early.
Going into halftime, GRC was down 1-0 and had to make adjustments to both sides of the ball to come back home with a win.
A penalty kick for Harrison County, who still had a 1-0 lead, was the opposite of what the Cards wanted coming out of the break.
A GRC handball inside the box gave the Thorobreds their PK, and they took advantage, getting it past the Cards keeper and extending their lead to 2-0.
Freshman Brandon Beltran, while young, has been in this position before.
His team needing multiple goals in the second half, he knew what he needed to do to put his team in the position they wanted to be in.
He found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to one.
With time running out, the team still needing a goal to even the score, Beltran looked to score again.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Beltran scored again to even out the game and send GRC home with a draw.
The Cardinals are back in action Thursday, Sept. 19 as they take on another 10th Region opponent, Pendelton County. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
