GRC students recognized by Youth Salute

Forty-five students from George Rogers Clark High School are among the 873 high school juniors from 53 high schools in Central Kentucky recognized in this year’s “Youth Salute.”
The 39th annual awards ceremony in their honor was Sunday, May 5, at Georgetown College.
Students were nominated by teachers, guidance counselors and principals for this year’s Youth Salute.
To qualify, the student had to be a junior (senior class of 2020), have a 3.0 GPA or better and have held at least two leadership roles to which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in school, religious or community sponsored organizations.
The Sun will feature several students each week.
Halle Hunt
Halle is a member of National Honor Society, Project Lead the Way biomedical sciences, Student Y Club and Beta Club. She is a 4-H camp counselor and 252 youth group leader. She also is a part of the marching band color guard and 4-H sewing. She plans to attend medical school to become a pediatrician.
Hannah Curreri
Hanna was junior class president and treasurer of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a member of National Beta Club, Cardinal Nets, Green Club and the girls golf varsity team. She also participates in the GRC DanceBlue fundraiser and The Student Leadership Challenge. She is a J.B. Holmes Service Project 2018 volunteer. She plans to major in biology or chemistry and play golf in college. She hopes to pursue a career in the medical field.
Hayden Turley
Hayden is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, 4-H teen leadership club, 4-H sewing club and Cardinal Nets Club. She participated in the Asbury Youth Becoming Leaders program. She volunteers as a worship leader and elementary church leader. She is also a member of the tennis team, and was sports editor for Smoke Signals. Hayden’s post-graduation plans are undecided, but she plans to attend college.
Hunter Helderman
Hunter is a member of National Honor Society and Beta Club. He is a member of the GRC varsity basketball team. He also participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum with a focus on medicine. He plans to attend the University of Kentucky for his bachelor’s degree and then attend medical school to pursue ophthalmology.
Jacob Fraley
Jacob is a member of the tennis team and 4-H trap shooting team. He is an Eagle Scout. He also participates in Beta Club, Y-Club, 4-H Leadership Club, National Honor Society and Upward basketball. He is an Operation Happiness volunteer and a member of the jazz, symphonic, marching and pep bands.
Joseph Edwards
Joseph is a Student Leadership Challenge participant. He is the percussion section leader for the marching band and also plays in the jazz band and percussion ensemble. He was named to the 7th District Honor Band and the University of Kentucky Honor Band. He also volunteers at his church in the children’s program and as a leader/co-director of vacation Bible school. Joseph plans to attend the University of Kentucky and major in engineering or computer science.
Joy Lisle
Joy is a Relay for Life committee member. She is also a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Green Club, Y Club, Cardinal Nets Club. She plays varsity golf. She volunteers for Operation Happiness and serves as a counselor at Cathedral Domain. She plans to major in biology and attend medical school.
Kaitlyn Newton
Kaitlyn is a HOSA program member with a focus on graduating with a Certified Nurse’s Assistant certification. She is also a Beta Club member. She was a GRC varsity cheerleader from 2016-17. She was also recognized at honor’s night for a 3.5 accumulative GPA. She plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University and earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing before continuing her education to earn a master’s degree in nursing.
Kaleb Houston
Kaleb is a member of the GRC marching band, and is also a squad leader. He participated in the GRC inaugural leadership program. He is a member of Y-Club, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Key Club and the varsity tennis team. He works as a referee for the Winchester Youth Soccer League and volunteers as a camp leader at Wesley Woods Church Camp. He plans to major in biology and then earn a doctorate in chiropractic.
Katelyn Sexton
Katelyn is chair of the Agriculture Literacy Committee. She is a member of National Honors Society, Beta Club, Clark County FFA, Cattleman’s Club, GRC girls softball, the Parliamentary Procedure team, the state meat judging team and Health Occupations Students of America. She also works as a junior counselor for Ignite Youth Group. Katelyun plans to major in biology and pre-medicine to become an orthopedic surgeon.
