George Rogers Clark’s girls soccer team picked up its fourth win in as many games last night with a 5-0 victory over the Madison Central Indians.
The star of the night was once again senior forward Delaney Manning, who picked up a hat trick, scoring three goals.
After taking 12 of the first 13 shots between the two teams, GRC got on the board first with a Manning goal late in the first half.
Taking a one-goal lead into the break, the Lady Cardinals came out on fire in the second half.
Two minutes in, Manning scores again.
The highlight of the night came from what looked like was going to be the goal that brought Madison Central back into it. After a shot got past goalkeeper Carrie Stevens, Indians fans cheered. However, Autumn Scott cleared the ball out of the six-yard box, and a sigh of relief came from the stands.
GRC, running on adrenaline, take advantage of the opportunity and run out on a counterattack.
With 27 minutes left in the game, Manning scores her third goal.
GRC was able to add two more late goals, one a difficult shot from outside of the box from Lakyn Griffith, the other was great teamwork, a goal from Nicole Davis off of an Autum Brinegar assist.
The Lady Cardinals played spectacular defense again, not allowing any goals and only giving up five shots to a quality opponent.
“We were creating a lot of things on the defensive side,” head coach Matthew Abner said. “They did a good job starting everything from the defense, moving to the midfield to the forwards. Our shape was good tonight.”
GRC is traveling to Gatlinburg, Tennessee this weekend to play in the Smoky Mountain Cup, a regional tournament that leads into the national tournament, The High School Cup.
