Mind and Body: Health dept. offers school-based programs

The Clark County Health Department offers a wide array of services and programs to the community.

As school began Wednesday, the health department will once again partner with schools in Clark County to provide education on various topics.

Programs for K-12 include:

— Reducing the Risk: A comprehensive sexual risk reduction program offered to grades 9-12. Topics include abstinence, contraceptives, using refusal skills, avoiding high-risk situations, HIV and preventing sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

— Tobacco Education: This program can be one session (class) or multiple based on the needs of the students. Provides information about the health hazards that accompany the use of tobacco products including cigarettes, e-cigarettes (Juul) and smokeless tobacco.

— Bullying and Suicide Prevention: This information is distributed during one class period. Information is provided about self-esteem, confidence building, potential signs of bullying and suicide, and what to do and who to turn to when someone is needing emotional support.

— Life Skills: Six to 15 sessions depending on the age group and frequency that classes are offered. Sessions include: assertiveness, dealing with stress, communication skills, tobacco facts, and influence of media.

— Health Events and Health Fairs: Information can be provided regarding hygiene, hand washing and other health-related topics.
