Cards get two wins in BGSG

The George Rogers Clark High School boys soccer team collected a pair of wins and one tie in the Bluegrass State Games last weekend.

Clark coach Nicholas Vogler was pleased with his team’s performances in his first three games as coach of the Cards.

“The Bluegrass State Games was a good start to our preseason campaign,” he said. “The team worked hard, were competitive, and came away with three positive results. The boys are buying into the style of soccer I am asking them to play.

“I believe they are starting to realize the opportunity is there for them to produce a very successful season.”

In the opener Saturday, the Cardinals defeated Pulaski Southwestern 5-1.

Skyler Hamon scored two goals and Brandon Beltran added a score, followed by Emidio Figueroa and Trevon Curtis with one goal apiece.

Beltran led Clark with three assists.

In the second game on Saturday, the Cards tied Bullitt East 1-1 with Beltran scoring the lone goal for Clark.

In a 10-0 win over Franklin Simpson, eight different players scored for the Cardinals.

Ryan Sosa and Nathan Sidwell each had two goals, followed by Ben Riley, Taylan Hayes, Dylan Reffett, Beltran, Sidwell, Tyree Brown and Harmon with one goal apiece.

Beltran led the team with three assists, followed by Hayes with two assists. Sidwell, Nate Horseman, Travon Curtis each had one assist.

“My coaching staff is excited to help push (the players) towards achieving the goals they have set, both individually and as a team,” Vogler said. “We are looking forward to our next scrimmage against Waggener on Aug. 3.”
