50 years ago

July 23, 1969

— Winchester’s first community swimming pool opened for business and a number of youngsters and some adults were soon splashing in the water. The pool would be open seven days a week for as long as weather permitted.

July 26, 1969

— The Winchester Plaza looks more and more like a shopping center as the weeks go by. Construction of the $1 million project being built on Lexington Road at the Van Meter Road interchange was set to be completed in the fall. More than 15 stores were expected to be located at the center.

— The tank atop the water tower on the Lexington Road was taking shape as the project neared completion, set for sometime in August. The $500,000 project was being built for the Winchester Municipal Utilities commission to improve water pressure in the Lexington Road area.

July 28, 1969

— The Clark County Legal Secretaries were planning their second annual variety show. Mrs. Sharon McGuire and Gale Price were selected to serve as directors of the show, scheduled for late October.

July 26, 1994

— Stevi Shea Haskins, 4, won several first-place honors in the Miss Lexington Baby Pageant. She placed first in beauty for her age class; first place for Miss Photogenic and fire for most personality.

15 years ago

July 26, 2004

— Shawntee Wortham was one of the first recipients of the Ralph L. Oliver Scholarship through a donation the late Oliver made to the Clark County Community Foundation, which established the scholarship fund to support deserving students pursuing postsecondary education at the Lexington Community College Winchester-Clark County Campus.

July 30, 2004

— George Rogers Clark High School was among six Kentucky schools to receive grants to promote heart healthy habits among students. GRCHS received $669 and used it to supply a nutrition teaching kit that included a fat model, a four-artery blockage module, 32 tubes of simulated fat and a low-fat curriculum to show students the impact of high-fat diets on the body.
