After Ava Muncie said she wasn’t gunning for Mayor Ed Burner’s job anytime soon, Burtner invited her to shadow him for the day.
Muncie, a fourth-grader at Justice Elementary School, was the Mayor during the Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass annual BizTown event May 3 in Lexington.
It was there she discovered being mayor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She said despite being fun, it still came with its share of stress and headaches.
Burtner, though, was determined to show her what being a mayor is really like.
Muncie followed Burtner for the day Wednesday. Burtner gave Muncie a tour of City Hall, a fire station, the courthouse, the jail and more. They also went to Bargains on Broadway for lunch.
In the commission chambers, Burtner walked Muncie through the history of Winchester.
“We need a woman up there,” Burtner said, pointing to the wall of Winchester mayors’ portraits. “Is it going to be you?”
Muncie said she was still on the fence about a potential 2030 run for Mayor, but Burtner said she’s got his vote.
Overall, Muncie said she had a great day and was thankful for Burtner’s invitation before returning to school in style in the passenger seat of a city police cruiser.
