The Clark County Board of Education got the George Rogers Clark High School gymnasium and athletic fields project one step closer to completion with the approval of video board purchases in its regular meeting Monday.
The board approved the purchase of a football stadium video scoreboard proposal from Daktronics for $168,094. The board also approved (4-1) the Daktronics purchase proposal for new video boards, equipment and installation costs for the GRC gymnasium and athletic fields project.
Board member Scott Hisle said he had concerns regarding the size of the boards as well as if there was a need for two boards. Hisle suggested tabling the item but did not make a formal motion. Instead, Board Chair Gordon Parido asked for a vote on the item as written on the agenda. Four board members voted in favor; Hisle opposed.
Superintendent Paul Christy said GRC is also working to develop a class to allow students to operate the boards.
The board also approved purchase of new football concussion helmets and pads for the GRC football team not to exceed $40,000.
The purchase is for 100 of Xenith’s shadow varsity helmet which retails for $479 a piece. The purchase also includes 100 new shoulder/leg pad sets. The quote was subject to the “Elite Program Discount” which offers a buy-one-get-one free discount.
Request is for the purchase funds to be allocated from the board’s general fund contingency fund.
A Xenith representative said the shadow varsity helmet is its newest product, and it is top of the line.
“With our technology and how we protect our athletes is the reason why GRC wants to move forward with our product,” the representative told the board.
Christy also recognized students attending the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts this summer: Galen Arnett, Benjamin Carpenter and Sarina McQuerry; and commended students attending the Governor’s Scholars Program: Mackenzie Cooper, Caroline Cuccinelli, Rachel Puckett, Hayden Turley and Hunter Helderman. Both programs are highly-selective and acceptance into the program is an honor, Christy said.
