Clark County Preschool is hosting a free two-day workshop that trains participants on a multisensory approach for teaching decoding, articulation and auditory discrimination.
The first session of “See the Sound: Visual Phonics” is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 13 at the preschool. The next training day is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 11. Participants must attend both days.
Preschool Principal Kara Davies, who is also the chair of the Clark Community Early Childhood Council (CCECC), said CCECC paid for the training.
“This free two-day training is designed to teach individuals interacting with children learning to read, speak and write,” Davies said. “This could attract parents, child care providers, teachers, librarians, church nursery staff, etc.”
ICLI Resource Specialist Kim Hall will train participants. The workshop, valued at $1,200, explores the multisensory Visual Phonics program and its benefits in reinforcing oral language, speech, literacy and writing skills for all students.
This hands-on workshop develops the skills necessary to implement Visual Phonics in the classroom to support beginning spelling and reading instruction.
“Visual Phonics is a system of hand gestures that provide visual stimulation to cue appropriate sounds,” Davies said. “It is very helpful in building a strong foundation for reading.”
Learner objectives include:
— Connect research with practice as it relates to Visual Phonics (See the Sound) and the impact it has on diverse learners
— Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Visual Phonics hand shapes and printed symbols
— Integrate of strategies and skills using Visual Phonics to reinforce literacy, writing and speech production
— Learn specific strategies for reinforcing articulation therapy while teaching letter recognition, phonemic awareness, phoneme-grapheme association and syllable/phoneme blending
— Educational interpreters will learn how to incorporate Visual Phonics hand shapes to support sound-based learning activities in general educational settings
