The George Rogers Clark High School boys basketball team dug itself out of holes to top Paris, 59-52, on the road Wednesday.
The Cardinals (11-3, 2-0) scored just four points and found themselves trailing 11-4 at the end of the first quarter to Paris (9-4, 2-2).
That lead became 18-11 before the Cardinals roared back with a 7-0 to make it 18-18.
A Chase Taylor layup with 37 seconds left in the second quarter gave GRC it’s first lead of the game, and a Jordan Graham jumper just before the buzzer gave the Cardinals the 24-23 halftime lead.
Again, the Greyhounds came out strong, building a 36-30 lead in the third quarter. And again, the Cardinals clawed back, tying it at 41 going into the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals held Paris to 11 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for their second district win.
“This is a good win,” GRC coach Josh Cook said. “This is a tough place to play. We didn’t play our best basketball, but it’s a district win. We had some guys step up tonight.”
Cook blamed the slow start on a lack of being aggressive, but said the Cardinals made the plays when they needed to pull out a win.
GRC was led by Brennan Canada’s 20 points. Will Philpot put in 16 points. Jordan Graham added eight, Chase Taylor put in seven and JJ Johnson scored six in the win.
Eric Johnson led the Greyhounds with 20 points.
Both of GRC’s district wins have come against Paris. The district action continues this week — Bourbon County (6-7, 0-2) comes to Winchester Friday. The boys play the second game of a doubleheader in Letcher Norton Gymnasium. The girls game is set to tip at 6 p.m. and the boys game follows.
The Colonels are coming off an 80-45 win at Nicholas County Tuesday.
They are led by Titus Ransom, who averages 20 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.
