Students at Baker Intermediate had a surprise in store for those who have served Friday morning at its Veterans Day program.

Throughout the previous week, Baker students had been working to raise $500 to pay for one veteran to go on an Honor Flight, an all expenses paid trip to bring veterans to see the        monuments and their memorials in Washington D.C.

By the end of the week, the students had brought in more than $1,000, and with some more fund raising and help from the school’s community partners, the school was able to present a check for $2,000 to Honor Flight representative George Campbell Friday.

The amount is enough to send four veterans on an Honor Flight free of charge.

“On behalf of the entire Honor Flight Kentucky family, we thank you,” Campbell said after accepting the check. “Too often we hear negative stories about our children, but this is one of those amazing stories.”

Campbell said  he will make plans to have the veterans who get to go on the flight because of the efforts come to meet “their Baker family.”

The donation even brought attention from U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, who visited the school Friday morning during the program to speak to the students and staff at Baker and give them a gift.

“You should all be very, very proud of yourselves,” Barr said. “For recognizing what these brave men and women have done for you and your generation and for future generations of America. We appreciate so much that you have recognized that.”

Barr gave the school a flag that had been flown at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. in honor of their efforts.
