Bids opened for GRC gym, athletic facility

Bids for construction of the George Rogers Clark High School gym and athletic facilities were opened Tuesday at the school.
More than 40 bids came in for the 19 categories advertised. The bids were opened by construction manager John Codell of Codell Construction, and after calculating the initial apparent low bidders, the base bid was projected to be about $20.1 million, near the board’s bonding potential.
That does not take into account the potential alternate bids members of the Clark County Board of Education may want to include as part of the project.
To keep costs down during the planning process, architects worked with the board to trim the scope of the project, removing some elements from the base bid and instead making them alternates. Some of the changes included the removal of dedicated visitor seating in the football stadium and the construction of tennis courts for both school and public use.
The board has not yet voted to accept any of the bids, so no final decisions on the project have been made.
According to Codell, the decision will likely come next week when the board is scheduled to have a regular meeting Oct. 17.
