The George Rogers Clark High School soccer teams hit the road over the weekend and were unable to bring back wins.
The boys team tied Boone County, 1-1, and the girls team feel at Newport Central Catholic, 3-1.
The boys (7-7-3) led in their game, 1-0, after Clayton Parks scored on an Alex Tyler assist with 16 minutes left in the first half. Boone scored just eight minutes into the second half and the game settled into a defensive battle.
“The team played well, it was a very physical match,” GRC assisnt coach Rex Catron said. “We tied, but I’m very proud of the guys for getting a result and playing tough for the entire 80 minutes.”
Catron filled in for coach Walter Ridener the past three games as Ridener served a suspension stemming from the loss at Pendleton County.
Ridener returns to the sideline when the Cards travel to Western Hills Tuesday night at 6 p.m. GRC doesn’t have another scheduled home game in the regular season, but hosts the district tournament which begins next week.
NCC 3, GRC 1
The GRC girls team (11-3-2) had gone a long time since it had last given up a goal.
But after six straight shutouts, it was No. 7 Newport Central Catholic who broke through.
The Cards fell behing 2-0 at halftime and the Thoroughbreds added a third midway thtough the second half.
GRC got on the board with 10 minutes left thanks to a Darby Manning goal off an assist from Carson Kovalic.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted, but we were able to learn some much from this game that will help us going into the district tournament,” GRC coach Matthew Abner said. “We looked fine at times, but small breakdowns gave NCC opportunies and they took advantage.”
The Cardinals return home tonight to take on Harrison County and celebrate senior night.
Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Strode Station Elementary.
