i understand the yard sale signs are getting carried away but why not get the address of the sign and fine those peopleafter 3 days. why penilize those of us that take ours down by making us get a permit.think it out before you take that kind of action.you could get some of the wmu employees that i see sitting in there trucks under the shade trees to collect them and ticket them.

I grew up in a very small town in a different state. We were allowed to have two yard sales a year, and it required a five dollar permit. I think it is a good idea. The city made a bit of income that went towards helping the city, and people didn't open flea markets in their yards. Make the permits cheap, though. Otherwise you would just be selling your stuff to pay the city for the right to sell it in your yard! Also, our city did what itsmedb suggested. If you didn't take down your signs you were fined. The address was right on the sign which made it easy for the authorities to find you :)

Ok....this is pure ignorant. It's my property-I own it-I can sell any of my stuff on it. The permit idea is so dumb. Winchester would do something like this. Times are hard and if there is something a person can do to make money to feed their family, they durn sure ought to be able to without consulting with the city. PLEASE!!!! Dumb, Dumb, Dumb idea!! What is this world coming to that the City Commisioners think this is what the majority of the people in WInchester want them to be taking care of. Ha Ha Ha. They have truly embarassed this city now. Pathetic!

I say let the commission go ahead and put a restriction on yard sales, and yes, even charge permit fees for it. Only then maybe the citizens of the city will finally see that it's time for this current commission, mayor, and city manager to go, and then vote in REAL representatives of the voters.

You own a residential property, not a business property. What makes you so special that you get to ignore business permits, taxes, etc.? If you want to sell a little something to make some money to feed your family, rent a booth at a flea market, sell online, or open a shop. I think people who have year round yard sales should be reported to the IRS, because I am sure they aren't claiming that income. Or does the fact you sell your crap in your yard make you immune to the laws and regulations everyone else has to comply with? If you want to move because Winchester won't let you open up a tax free shop in your front yard, then I hope you do. It's stuff like that that makes this city an embarrassment at times.

LOL it s their property who are you or anyone else to tell then what to do with it. So what if it is in the city limits the, city did not pay for the property or the taxes on the property. The fact taht the property owner did gives them the right to do what they want on their property.

As for the utility poles signs and signs they pay for those too, many times over. we pay the fees for the phone company the cable company, the electric company trust me we pay my share if people want to put they want to put the signs on the poles, they have paid for many times over, who cares. In tough economic times, complaints on not enouth money and people not doing enough for themself, yardsales is the fight people want to pick...WTHE, I would like to think people know we have bigger problems to focus on. God save me form the people who try to help themself, bleeeh. I know it is the LAW, guess what so is illegal immigration if we can ignore that I think we can ignore yardsales and yardsale signs, pfffth.

I guess anyone can open up shop in their yard. No need for health inspections for your cheap brownies or hot dogs, no sales tax, no need to claim it on your taxes, no worry about zoning laws, and who cares if there is no room for parking and your neighbors have to fight traffic or deal with people parking in their way all weekend. After all, it's a free country. All the other people who actually opened and maintain a legitimate business are the idiots. The American way - look out for yourself because laws and courtesy are for everyone else!

Neighborhoods are zoned for a reason. Owning a property doesn't make you god of that little patch of land. There are still laws and guidelines one must follow. You need permits to do many things on your own land. Why should turning your private residence into a business for a few days be any different?

I agree there are more important things the city should be dealing with; like the water company situation! But I don't think it is wrong or ignorant for the city to enforce yard sales. Most cities already have the permit rule in place. Winchester is just last to jump on the bandwagon.

Well we are all entitled to agree to disagree, guess that is just what we will have to do on this one. Maybe next time we can just agree. We can meet at "we have bigger fish to fry" :).
