George Rogers Clark junior Taylor Kindred is already looking forward to next year.
“I have a taste of it (playing in the state tournament) and we want to come back next year,” she said. “We want to come back and do better than we did this year.”
The Lady Cardinals (19-11) enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent history by making their first appearance in the girls Sweet Sixteen since 1995. The Lady Cardinals defeated Ohio County in double overtime in the first round before falling to Rockcastle County in the quarterfinals.
“No one expected us to do a whole lot and we came down here and won a game,” Clark coach Scott True said. “Hopefully that will encourage some kids and encourage some other kids to pick up the ball and start playing.”
True said the team’s senior class featuring Kayla Jones, Jewel Rogers, Lyndsey Borders and Brittany Black, have provided a stepping stone for other teams to follow.
“They have laid the foundation for things that are coming,” True said. “Our kids got the experience and will want to do it again. I told the girls not to take it for granted. We aren’t guaranteed to come back, but we have a taste of it now and we’ll learn from the experience. Hopefully it will motivate the kids to come back and work harder and build on that.”
Clark won 13 of its last 15 games and ended Montgomery County’s five-year reign as 10th Region champions.
The Lady Cards defeated the Lady Indians three times during the season, including twice in the postseason.
“Our kids went on a great run,” True said.
The Clark coach added that the most valuable tool his team gained was the experience of playing on the big stage.
“The biggest thing for us is learning (from playing in the state tournament),” True said. “I told them it hurts (after the game), but it’s something they will remember for the rest of their lives. Only a small percentage of kids get to play (in the state tournament) and never get the chance to come back and play again.
“It’s a credit to their hard work for the season that we put together.”
