Sweet Sixteen: Lady Cards brace for Lady Rockets

March 12, 2010

BOWLING GREEN – George Rogers Clark coach Scott True is enjoying the ride in his team’s first appearance in the state tournament since 2005.

The Lady Cardinals won their opener with a 67-63 win over Ohio County in double overtime Thursday night during the opening round of the girls Sweet Sixteen at E.A. Diddle Arena.

“We relaxed and stayed with our stuff,” True said. “We just said ‘keep battling and good things are going to happen’ and eventually it did.”

Despite making their first appearance in the tournament in 15 years, the Lady Cardinals continued their success in first round games. The opening marked the Lady Cards’ ninth overall appearance with a record of 8-1 in openers and has a 3-4 record in second-round games.

Clark (19-10) will take on Rockcastle County in the last of four quarterfinal games today at 9 p.m.

“We’ve got nothing to lose now,” True said. “Rockcastle County is ranked third or fourth in the state and we just need to come out and see what we can do. We’ve talked about this all year long. We’ve prepared for this – back-to-back games on back-to-back nights - and how we (handle it).”

The Lady Rockets (28-4) rolled in their tournament opener with a 69-36 rout over Murray Thursday night. Rockcastle will be led by Sara Hammond and Jackie Alexander. Alexander led the team with 15.6 points per game, while Hammond averaged 15 points per contest during the regular season. Angie Lawrence chipped in with 11.8 points per game.

Clark said his team avoided first-round jitters to overcome the Lady Eagles’ speed and quickness.

“We just stayed with our stuff,” he said. “Defensively, we kept pressuring them. This team in the postseason has been special (on defense). It wasn’t as good as it’s been, but one thing that was good at the end was we got a tip and a steal that sealed it for us.”
