Police arrested one man for three recent copper thefts and say they know who is responsible for more.
Thursday afternoon, Winchester Police charged Charles Harrison, 52, of 408 N. Main St., with three counts of theft by unlawful taking for allegedly taking copper from a Kentucky Utilities pole on First Street from Trinity United Methodist Church and from Fannie Bush Elementary School in recent days.
Winchester Police Detective Danny Thomas said officers traced back to Harrison copper that had been turned in to a metal recycler. When police picked him up Thursday, Harrison confessed to the three thefts, Thomas said. Damage was estimated at $2,000.
“He was doing this to support a drug habit,” Thomas said.
There has been a rash of copper thefts throughout the city and county in recent weeks, from both businesses and homes.
“We know who’s doing it,” Thomas said. “We just haven’t caught them. (Harrison) is one of the small ones.”
Copper theft had slowed in recent months, but prices for the metal have risen again, police said.
