Lady Cards brace for similar style in opener
March 11, 2010
The George Rogers Clark girls basketball team arrived in Bowling Green Wednesday.
“They’re very, very excited and glad to be here,” Clark coach Scott True said. “We’re getting settled in and we’re going to try and take care of business (tonight).”
The Lady Cards (18-10) enjoyed leisure time and watched the first session of the girls Sweet Sixteen before getting prepared for the task ahead. Clark will make its first appearance in the state event for the first time in 15 years at 9 tonight against Ohio County in the E.A. Diddle Arena at Western Kentucky University.
The Lady Cardinals have won 12 of their last 13 games, while the Lady Eagles carry a 15-game winning streak into the tourney. Ohio County (24-7) defeated Owensboro Catholic 62-60 in the 3rd Region finals last weekend to earn its third straight ticket to the prestigious tourney.
True said his first-round opponent is a mirror image of his squad.
“They play a lot like us,” he said. “They press a lot, they like and up-tempo game and they’ve got two really good guards that make them go. We’re going to have our hands full, but it sounds like they’re going to play similar to the way we do.”
True said his biggest task will be eliminating the first-game jitters. True said a key will be “getting ahead” in the first quarter.
“The quicker we can get relaxed and get a feel for ourselves, the better off we’ll be,” he said. “The biggest advantage Ohio County has is that they have been here the last three years. They know what it’s about and we’re still learning that a little bit. We’ve just got to settle down (early). We can’t turn the ball over just because we’re nervous. We’ve just got to settle down and play. We’ll just let the chips fall and see what happens.”
The Clark coach added that he wants his team to “enjoy” the experience and “have a good time with it, but remember that we’re here to play.”
“Just like any other game, we want to try and get better each day,” he said. “I think this goal this week is to enjoy the experience and give our best effort on the court. As long as we give our best effort, we’ll take whatever outcome comes.”
