Check counterfeiting suspects sought

March 9, 2010

Lexington Police are trying to identify a number of suspects believed to have cashed counterfeit checks around the region, including Winchester.

According to the Lexington Division of Police, several females obtained Kentucky identification cards on Feb. 23, likely with other people’s names. Since then, they have been cashing forged checks at banks in Lexington, Winchester, Georgetown, Mount Sterling, Somerset and Nicholasville.

So far, they have stolen approximately $40,000. All the checks have been in the high $900 range, police said.

The names on the cards may be the same as identity theft victims in Illinois. The suspects were last seen in Lexington March 3, and have been staying in local hotels.

Anyone with information on the women should call Lexington Police at 258-3600 or Bluegrass Crime Stoppers at 253-2020 of www.bluegrasscrimestoppers.com.
