No outside air conditioning units are safe from being ripped apart by thieves searching for copper.
In the last week, 10 people have reported losing copper wiring or pipes from homes, Winchester Police Sgt. Don Skinner said. Two Kentucky Utilities substations on Rockwell Road and a third on Mount Sterling Road have been hit as well, losing copper wiring to thieves.
Skinner expects the numbers to get worse as temperatures rise and people begin turning on their AC units.
“There’s no outside air conditioning unit in this town that’s safe,” Skinner said. “Many people won’t know until they turn their air conditioning on in the spring.”
In some instances, the thieves target empty or vacant homes and remove every scrap of wiring from the walls and from the AC unit outside, he said.
“There are others where they took all the copper pipes as well as the wiring,” Skinner said.
Rising copper prices may be fueling the latest rash of copper thefts, he said. Prices had dropped for a while, and demand cooled. As prices have increased, so have the number of thefts, he said.
“Neighbor needs to help neighbor,” Skinner said. “People are going to have to start taking care of their own property.”
