Construction on the pool at College Park is progressing smoothly and is on schedule for a May opening, according to Winchester/Clark County Parks Board Chairman Charlie Eury.
Eury told board members at their monthly meeting Monday that workers are putting the finishing touches to the project and expect to be out of the building around April 5.
“The pool project is coming along good. The painting process took a little longer than we thought, but they will be wrapping up painting this week and they’re pretty well down to installing fixtures and things like that,” said Eury.
“At that point, the Parks Board will be in position to start moving and go through a series of test runs, a shake down process-type thing. Then I think we’re looking at an opening to the public sometime in May.”
The College Park Gym was closed for a time due to fumes from the painting process, but Eury said while there are still some smells, the latest roll-on application of paint kept those down to a “manageable level” and the gym remains open.
In other business the board:
— discussed selling some type of lifetime membership for the wellness center. The board decided to check a few details for the membership with its legal counsel before deciding on what type of lifetime membership to offer.
— reviewed proposed budgets for the maintenance and recreation departments, as well as the new natatorium. The proposed budgets will be sent to city and county governments for approval.
— received an update on the aquatics program from Mandy Faulkner, aquatics director/programer. She told board members that a series of commercials advertising the upcoming opening of the natatorium began running last week on cable and satellite television and area radio stations.
— received an update on the progress of the interview process for lifeguards for the pool. Eury said 24 applicants had been interviewed thus far, and he was pleased with both the quality and number of applicants.
— approved hiring Steve Hooten, Harvey Embry, Sam Anderson and Chris Gilbert for seasonal part-time temporary maintenance positions.
— approved sending maintenance supervisor Ken Davis and Steve Hooten for state certification for pesticide application.
— approved a $3,090 bid from Blue Grass Recreational Products to replace the swings at Lykins Park.
— approved a bid of $1,451 from Allied Communications for replacement of a panel board for the fire alarm elevator system at College Park Gym.
— approved a bid from Bypass Rentals for “port-a-pottie” rentals of $50 per month for regular units and $55 per month for handicap units.
— received updates on the chess, disc golf and summer day camp programs. The parks board is currently accepting applications for day camp counselors.
