MAYSVILLE — Mason County pulled off a “Maysville Miracle” Monday night.
The Royals ended George Rogers Clark’s season with a stunning 62-60 win over the Cardinals in the 10th Region finals in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Mason County Fieldhouse. Former Royals standout and current University of Kentucky sophomore Darius Miller, along with Kentucky freshman DeMarcus Cousins, were among the more than 4,000 fans in the stands who caught a glimpse of a memorable showdown between the two region rivals.
Clark was favored by many to win its first region title since 2007, but the Royals continued their recent dominance by capturing its third consecutive crown and seventh in the past 10 years to earn a spot in next week’s boys Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena. Mason (23-6) will take on the winner of the 3rd Region at 6:30 p.m. on March 18.
The Cardinals had an eight-game winning streak snapped and ended the season with a 26-7 record. Clark led by seven twice in the first half and once in the second half, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch.
The hosts led 61-57 with 18 seconds left before Clark’s Vinny Zollo drained a 3-pointer that narrowed the margin to 61-60 with 9.9 seconds left. Justin Lang made one of two free throws that pushed the margin to 62-60 with 8.8 seconds remaining, giving Clark one last shot.
On the Cards’ last possession Robbie Stenzel’s pass intended for Jaylen Daniel in the open court was deflected by Trevor Setty and the Royals recovered as time expired, sending the Mason County contingent into a frenzy.
