Kayla Jones is preparing for a road trip.
“I’m ready,” she said. “I’ve had my stuff packed for Bowling Green.”
Jones and the rest of her teammates will depart for the trip to the western part of the state Wednesday morning after George Rogers Clark won its first 10th Region crown in 15 years with a 48-35 triumph over five-time defending champion Montgomery County Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse at Mason County.
Clark (18-10) has won 12 of its last 13 games and advances to this week’s state tournament in Bowling Green. The Lady Cards will take on Ohio County — the winner of the 3rd region — at 9 p.m. Thursday at E.A. Diddle Arena at Western Kentucky University. Ohio County clinched a berth in the state event following a 62-60 triumph over Owensboro Catholic Saturday night.
It was the first regional title for Clark coach Scott True, who was overjoyed by the team’s accomplishment.
“It will hit me soon, but it feels awfully good,” he said.
Clark and Montgomery met in the regional finals last season at Harrison County, with the Lady Indians posting a 51-44 win over the Lady Cards for their fifth straight region title, but the Lady Cards ended Montgomery County’s dominance in this year’s rematch.
“It’s about time,” Clark junior Taylor Kindred said. “I am so ready to go to state. It was kind of hard at the beginning, but I’m glad we pulled it out.”
The Lady Indians (17-14) didn’t give up the regional title without a fight. The Lady Indians tied the score in the fourth quarter, but Clark responded and scored 14 of the last 15 points to clinch the title. The response was similar to the one the Lady Cards used in an 54-41 triumph over Covington Scott in the regional semifinals.
“I told them it was just like the other night,” True said. “Covington Scott made a run, we answered and Montgomery made a run. We had to answer — and we did.”
Jones led the Lady Cardinals with 13 points and scored seven of those in the second quarter. Taylor Kindred connected on two crucial treys in the second half and followed Jones with 12, while Preshia Rogers followed with 11.
Clark led 34-25 at the end of the third quarter, but Montgomery didn’t give up its region title without a fight. The Lady Indians rallied and tied the score 34-34 with 5:17 remaining, but a field goal by Jones and a 3-pointer by Kindred gave Clark the lead for good.
Jones wasn’t surprised by her team’s successful comeback.
“I knew we would come back,” she said. ‘We just had to settle down, but we came back.”
True was pleased with his team’s response to the Lady Indians’ late run.
“It was just a gutty effort,” he said. “We struggled offensively and they had a lot to do with that, but we just stuck with it. Our defense was tremendous. I can’t say enough about how proud I am of them.”
