MAYSVILLE – The Lady Cards are bound for Bowling Green.
George Rogers Clark won its first 10th Region crown in 15 years with a 48-35 triumph over five-time defending champion Montgomery County Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse at Mason County.
Clark (18-10) has won 12 of its last 13 games and advances to next week’s state tournament in Bowling Green. The Lady Cards will take on Ohio County - the winner of the 3rd region at 9 p.m. Thursday at E.A. Diddle Arena. Ohio County reached the state following a 62-60 triumph over Owensboro Catholic Saturday night.
Clark and Montgomery met in the regional finals last season at Harrison County, with the Lady Indians posting a 51-44 win over the Lady Cards for their fifth straight region title, but the Lady Cards ended Montgomery County’s dominance.
Kayla Jones led the Lady Cardinals with 13 points and scored seven of those in the second quarter. Taylor Kindred connected on two crucial treys in the second half and followed Jones with 12, while Preshia Rogers followed with 11.
Clark led 34-25 at the end of the third quarter, but Montgomery didn’t give up its region title without a fight. The Lady Indians rallied and tied the score 34-34 with 5:17 remaining, but a field goal by Jones and a 3-pointer by Kindred gave Clark the lead for good.
