The Berea Parks and Recreation Department announces the 2010 quilt workshop schedule.
In support of the quilting community locally and statewide, the Parks Department has worked hard to select and recruit three of the most well-known quilt instructors in the nation. With experience levels ranging from beginner to advanced, the schedule offers something for everyone who enjoy the art of quilting.
The first workshop slated for 2010 will be taught by Mary Sorenson of Longwood, Fla. Sorenson’s two-day extended workshop, titled “Ribbon Basket Medallion,” will explore the challenges that complex hand appliqué patterns present while stitching a graceful floral medallion. Students will learn new techniques while weaving satin, grosgrain or moiré ribbon into a unique basket which holds cascades of branches and flowers. Particular emphasis will be placed on fabric selection and achieving both variety and balance while using a wide array of fabrics and prints.
The workshop will be April 30-May 1 at the Broadway Building from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On April 30 at 6 p.m., Sorenson will also present a one hour lecture titled “Appliqué and Piecing-A Marvelous Mix.” The presentation will explore the possibility of combining appliqué and piecing to create a perfect pairing of wonderful mixed technique quilts.
Second in the workshop line-up is instructor Laura Wasilowksi of Elgin, Ill. Laura’s workshop is the perfect precursor to the annual Quilt Extravaganza, hosted by the Berea Arts Council, and the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society Conference (KHQS), which Berea is proud to host for the first time. Wasilowski will teach a two-day workshop titled “Fusing Fun: Fast, Fearless Art Quilts” from Aug. 4-5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Broadway Building. Participants will work with fusible web on fabric and will discover fusing techniques like free cutting, strip fusing, confetti collage, playing blocks and improvisational assemblage.
On Aug. 6, Wasilowski will teach “Color Chip Collage,” which is a one day workshop where she will teach participants to create an improvisational quilt from bright, fused fabrics by building quick collages from free-cut fabric chips. Participants will learn to arrange the collage blocks into pictorial or abstract designs with simple fusing techniques.
The Berea Parks and Recreation and Tourism Departments will offer a luncheon and lecture with Wasilowski at the Boone Tavern at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. “I Quilt, Therefore I Am” will include a colorful and humorous history of the artist's life presented with slides of her narrative quilts. The biographical section of the slide show is followed by information about the design process and techniques used in creating her quilts. The lecture is open to the public.
The Berea Parks and Recreation 2010 Quilt Workshop line-up will conclude with a two-day workshop taught by Sue Benner from Dallas, Texas, who has been a studio artist since 1980. “Fusing the Grid” will be Oct. 22-23 at the Broadway Building. In this particular workshop, participants will create a series of several art quilts based on the grid. This workshop focuses on developing new directions in color, working in a series, and experimenting with silk and other fibers.
In addition to the workshop, Benner will facilitate a one hour lecture titled “The Working Path” the evening of Oct. 22. The lecture will feature slides and examples of her dye-painted textiles and art quilts. “The Working Path” refers to exploring the connection between concepts and process. Sue will walk down a creative path developing her ideas and techniques and will show detailed photos revealing her working process including surface design, fusing and stitching.
For more information, or to register for any of these workshops or the luncheon with Laura Wasilowski, call the Berea Parks and Recreation Department at (859) 986-9402.
Pre-registration for the workshops is required.
