I haven’t found any special cards or decorations yet, but this week starts National Nutrition Month. This is one celebration that you can begin and continue for a lifetime.
Like other holidays we celebrate, there are many activities you can adopt as traditions for your family. All of us need to eat a variety of foods each day and we can best do this by eating food selections from all the food groups.
Why not try a new nutritious recipe or add a new fruit or vegetable each week? You could even be brave and try whole grains!
Here are some other tips to start your celebration:
— Make half your grains whole
— vary your veggies
— focus on more fruits
— choose calcium rich foods
— go lean with protein
— and don’t forget physical activity
As you join the celebration of National Nutrition Month, we’ll talk each week about each of the tips and how we can incorporate that into daily diet. Enjoy the party, now and every day, the healthy way.
For more information on Nutrition Month and making healthy food choices, contact the Clark County Extension Office at 744-4682.
Jennifer Howard is the County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences.
