By placing third in a regional tournament, Eastern Kentucky University’s mock trial team is once again headed for the national championship event, a feat achieved by only about a third of the teams across the U.S.
Two EKU teams participated in the regional tournament on Feb. 19-21 in Louisville, with one of the teams placing third, thereby earning a bid to compete in the opening round of the National Championship in St. Paul, Minn., March 19-21.
The regional event drew 22 teams, with EKU topping teams from Western Kentucky University, University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee, University of South Carolina, University of Cincinnati, Murray State University, Butler University and Rhodes College among others.
Miami University took first place and one of the Vanderbilt teams placed second.
“We met that Vanderbilt team in a round and split ballots with them,” said Dr. Sara Zeigler, one of the EKU coaches, along with colleagues Thomas Parker and Lynnette Noblitt. “One judge had us winning by two and the other had Vandy winning by two.”
EKU’s Alexandra Sipes, a political science major and honors program student from Mount Sterling, was one of 10 students (out of 144) honored as an All-Region Attorney.
Zachary Caldwell, a political science major from Elizabethtown, was named an All-Region Witness.
Other members of the qualifying team were: Ashley Barber, an English major and honors program member from Ashland; William Foster, a fire and safety engineering technology major from Syracuse; James Pennington, a political science and paralegal science major from Manchester; Marcus Segura, an apparel design and merchandising major from Fort Thomas; Sara Martin, a paralegal science major and honors program member from Dawson Springs; and Dana Fritz, a philosophy major
from Winchester.
Financial support for the team is provided by the Department of Government, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Justice and Safety, the Student Government Association, and Distinguished Alumnus Robert Sanders.
