Facebook spoof about teen’s death is unconscionable

To the editor:

I am writing this on behalf of my friends and coworkers who have recently suffered a loss due to a tragic car accident.

As you know, and as was reported on your Web site, Shawna Taylor died Tuesday in a single car accident. It is a tragedy when a young person in our community has her life cut short, even when many of us have no personal ties to her or the family — which aptly describes my situation.

I feel for the family and friends of this young lady as they mourn her untimely passing. However, there are some young people in our community who have taken it upon themselves to mock her death via Facebook, which is why I am choosing to write this letter.

I understand that many people in our community do not use this site, which is why I chose to bring it to light.

I find it disgusting that these individuals would create and participate in a Facebook group page devoted to an inanimate object that took the life of someone in our community, as well as provide some of the comments on the page itself.

We all have the right of free speech, and we certainly all have the right to like, or dislike, any human being we may come in contact with throughout our life, but this blatant insensitivity from her classmates should be dealt with.

Of course, this group has been reported, but it should not rest on the shoulders of the social networking site to remove it. Our parents, guidance counselors and community as a whole should chastise the creators and participators of this group in hope that it will be taken down.

I know that these individuals would not appreciate something like this if it were their mother, father, sibling or friend who passed away, and they should be ashamed.

I see that you have received many comments regarding your reporting of this accident on your Web site. Many of them were wrong.

You did the right thing. You are an asset to our community, and your services do not go unnoticed.

An angry veteran speaks his mind

To the editor:

I want to ask you to support Bill Johnson.

Bill is a candidate for the U.S. Senate and is the only candidate who is a military veteran and not a career politician.

Running against Bill is Rand Paul. Rand is the son of Ron Paul and is being financed mostly by supporters outside Kentucky.

Rand has a lot of support from the “Truther” movement. The Truthers claim Bush is responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Though Rand keeps clear of statements like this, read some of the bloggers who support him.

The nuts don’t fall far from the tree!

Rand’s supporters are also in the peace movement, recently in an organization called Oath Keepers.

A Rand Paul supporter started a blog called “Iraq War Veterans Against the War.” It turns out the man who started it is not an Iraq War veteran or even someone who served in any branch of the military at all. Once he was discovered, he was banned from the Oath Keepers.

Rand Paul supporters claim the War on Terror is an illegal war.

Rand Paul supporters refer to members of the Army and Air National Guard as “weekend warriors.” Back in the 1980s, we deserved that title, but since 9/11 there have been several weekend warriors who have given there lives in support of the War on Terror.

The National Guard and Reserves have fought the fight and lost a lot blood for this nation.

I would like to remind the Rand Paul campaign staff of a man named Robert Henderson III, a lieutenant in the Kentucky Army National Guard. This “weekend warrior” was killed in Iraq on April 17, 2004.

It is for the memory of National Guard heroes like him that I will fight, and I know without a doubt my fellow veteran Bill Johnson will fight for them.

The other candidate is Trey Greyson. Trey is a very good person, but he is that typical politician. We need a warrior in D.C., not another politician.

We have got to stop sending career politicians to Washington.

To me, the system is corrupt. I have no faith in Demoralcrats (misspelled on purpose) or Republicans. We have got to start over. We need citizen representatives, not career politicians funded by special interests and rich daddies.

Sgt. Dale Elliott, Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Shepherdsville
